Seven steps. Honest timelines. No nasty surprises — here’s exactly what happens when you commission a Hampshire garden design from our family team.
One of the most common worries we hear from Hampshire homeowners is “I don’t really know what happens when you commission a garden design.” That’s fair — it’s not something most people do twice. So here’s exactly what to expect, step by step, with realistic timelines for each stage.
Day 1 · FREE
We come to you, walk around your garden, and listen. We don’t bring a clipboard. We just ask what you’d love your garden to be in five years, what’s frustrating you about it now, who uses it (kids, dogs, grandparents, you alone with a cup of tea on a Sunday). We’ll be honest about whether a full design makes sense for your project — sometimes it doesn’t, and we’ll tell you so.
Time on site: roughly 1-2 hours. You’ll have a written quote for design within a week.
Week 2-3 · SURVEY
If you proceed, our team comes back with measuring kit, soil testers and a camera. We map the garden accurately, test soil pH and drainage in 2-3 spots, photograph everything, note sun direction and existing structures. This is the bit that separates good designs from generic ones. Hampshire soils vary enormously — we won’t recommend acid-loving plants for a chalk garden, or moisture-lovers for a sandy New Forest plot.
Week 3-5 · CONCEPT
Your designer works up an initial 2D layout showing the garden’s structural shape — patios, paths, lawn areas, planted zones, key features. We present this in person (or video call if you prefer) and you tell us what you love, what to change, what to keep, what to lose. Most clients have 2-3 rounds of revisions at this stage.
Week 5-6 · 3D MODEL
This is the bit that surprises people. We build a full 3D model of the design so you can walk through your future garden on screen. Move the seating, change the fence, see how the patio looks at sunset. Most clients change their mind about at least one big detail at this stage — which is exactly why we do it before building anything.
Week 6-8 · FINAL PLAN
Once the design is signed off, we produce the complete pack: full construction drawings, a detailed planting plan with every variety named and quantified, materials list with suppliers and prices, lighting scheme, and an itemised construction cost. From this point on, there are no surprises.
Weeks 9-24 · BUILD
Our family team build the garden. We provide a written schedule and stick to it. You’ll have a single point of contact throughout (one of the family) and weekly progress updates. We work through hard landscaping (patios, walls, drainage, structures), then soft landscaping (lawn, planting, lighting), in that order. A typical Hampshire family garden takes 6-12 weeks on site; bigger projects take 3-5 months.
After completion · AFTERCARE
We come back six weeks after planting to check everything’s establishing well, top up any soft landscaping that needs it, and answer questions. We then return at 12 months for a free maintenance visit and to plant out any seasonal extras. Aftercare is included — not an add-on.
