Garden fencing and planting design by Helyers of Hampshire landscapers

What We Can Do

Fencing

Fencing can be decorative as much as it is functional, securing your property or marking a boundary. We install and repair fencing and gates of all sizes and types, including picket, metal, trellis, and brickwork.

Our most popular option is close board fencing, renowned for its strength and versatility as well as its good looks. Rails are precision-sawn for a neater finish, fences are designed for use with slotted Jakposts, constructed with three rails for extra strength, and topped by capped rails; all fixings are stainless steel or galvanised. Matching gates are also available.

Types of Fencing We Install

We install a comprehensive range of fencing styles to suit every garden design, boundary requirement, and budget:

  • Closeboard (featherboard) fencing – The most popular choice for privacy and security. Strong, durable, and available in treated softwood or hardwood. Can be installed with or without a gravel board at the base.
  • Slatted horizontal fencing – A contemporary alternative to traditional closeboard, using horizontal boards for a modern, clean aesthetic. Excellent for urban and contemporary garden designs.
  • Post and rail fencing – Ideal for rural boundaries, paddocks, and open garden areas. Simple, effective, and cost-efficient for long runs.
  • Trellis panels – Used as a topper to existing fencing or as a standalone screen, ideal for climbing plants and for adding height without full enclosure.
  • Picket fencing – A charming, traditional style perfect for front gardens and cottage-style properties.
  • Acoustic fencing – Specially designed panels that provide noise reduction, ideal for properties adjacent to busy roads.
  • Metal and steel railings – Low-maintenance, long-lasting, and suited to both traditional and contemporary homes.

Fencing and Planning Permission in Hampshire

In most cases, you do not need planning permission to erect a garden fence — but there are important restrictions you should be aware of:

  • Fences next to a road used by vehicles (including a footpath) must not exceed 1 metre in height without planning permission.
  • All other boundary fences must not exceed 2 metres in height without planning permission.
  • If your property is a listed building or within a conservation area, additional restrictions may apply and permitted development rights may be limited.
  • Some new-build properties have specific conditions that remove permitted development rights for fencing.

Our team is familiar with local planning requirements across Hampshire and will flag any potential issues before work begins, so you can proceed with confidence.

Our Fencing Installation Process

Every Helyers fencing project is completed to a high standard, with careful attention to post depth, panel alignment, and long-term durability:

  1. Site assessment and quote – We measure the boundary, check ground conditions, and provide a detailed no-obligation quote including materials and labour.
  2. Post installation – Posts are set either in concrete or with a driven post spike depending on ground conditions, ensuring long-term stability.
  3. Panel fitting – Panels are hung level and true, with gravel boards fitted where required to protect the base from ground contact and moisture.
  4. Gate installation – If your project includes a gate, we ensure it is properly hung with quality ironmongery for smooth, lasting operation.
  5. Clear up – We remove all old fencing, posts, and waste materials, leaving your garden boundary clean and secure.

Most residential fencing projects are completed within 1 to 2 days.
