April Gardening Tip: The Last Frost Watch in Hampshire

April is the most exciting and unpredictable month in the Hampshire garden. Growth explodes, but late frosts are still possible — so knowing when to plant out and when to wait is the key skill for April gardening.

Watch the Forecast

In Hampshire, the last frost usually falls between mid-April and early May. Keep fleece handy for tender young plants like dahlias, courgettes, and half-hardy annuals. Established hardy perennials and shrubs are fine — it’s the soft new growth that needs protecting.

Plant Bare-Root Roses & Trees

The bare-root season ends in April as plants break into leaf. If you’ve been meaning to add roses, hedging, or fruit trees, get them in the ground this month. Water in well and add a mulch to retain moisture.

Feed Lawns & Borders

Apply a balanced spring lawn feed once the grass is growing strongly. For borders, a general granular fertiliser like fish, blood and bone worked into the soil around established plants sets them up for the season.
